One Tip for Beating the Heat in Downtown Arlington This August

Share

Downtown Arlington's own August guide points to a simple move: plan your outing around

Tax-Free Weekend, Aug. 7–9

, and stick to indoor stops during the hottest part of the day.

Here's why it works. Texas's sales-tax holiday falls right in the middle of the month, and Downtown Arlington's boutiques — Donna's Gift Closet, The Mosaic Market, Wondrous Works Gift Shop, Commodities, Stash VHS, and Deep Dive Vintage among them — are all within walking distance of each other. That means you can knock out back-to-school shopping without moving your car between stops, and every one of those stores is air-conditioned.

Pair the shopping with indoor cooling breaks: grab a milk tea at Rocketbelly or Kung Fu Tea, Italian ice at Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard, or a coffee at Arlington Coffee Roasters or Arwa Yemeni Coffee. If you're traveling with kids, Cidercade and Tokyo Station's arcade games are fully indoor detours that buy you another hour out of the sun.

One more layer: the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library is running its Discover Summer Reading Challenge through July 31, so if you're beating the heat with kids before Tax-Free Weekend arrives, that's a free, air-conditioned stop too.

Parking Downtown is free on the street, in public lots, and in garages, so there's no added cost to stringing several stops together in one trip.
