What's Happening This Week in Mesquite

We have a couple of good reasons to get out of the house this week. First up, the Mesquite Farmers Market is back at City Lake Park on Wednesday afternoon.

It runs from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m.

, and this is the time of year when the produce really starts to pop. Expect fresh peaches from East Texas, early okra, and a ton of tomatoes.

The honey vendor from Kaufman County usually sells out fast, so get there early if you want a jar. There is also a new face this week.

A local teenager named Leo has started a small booth selling homemade salsa from his family's garden. He goes through about 40 jars each market day, and word is spreading quick.

Second, the City Council holds its regular meeting on Monday night at 6:30 p.m.

at City Hall. The big item on the agenda is a public hearing about the proposed zoning changes near the 635 and I-30 interchange.

If you have been wondering about all the construction signs popping up along that corridor, this meeting will tell you exactly what is being planned. It is a good chance to hear the details straight from the planners and ask questions directly.

Both events are free and open to anyone. No RSVP needed for either one.

Speaking of growth, let me shift gears and talk about what is actually changing on the ground around Mesquite right now.

Trivia Question❓

In which city known for its cowboy culture, rodeo competitions, and BBQ restaurants, can you find a species of tree that is commonly referred to as the "pioneer tree of the desert" due to its ability to thrive in harsh conditions?

Real Estate and Growth Check

  • Real Estate and Growth Check You have probably noticed the construction fencing going up along the south side of I-30 near Belt Line. That is the site for The Press*, a new mixed-use development breaking ground this month. The project will bring 220 apartment units with ground floor retail space. The developer is targeting local businesses for those retail spots, not chains. They have already signed a lease with a family run coffee roaster from Dallas and a small ramen shop that started as a food truck. Both are expected to open sometime early next year. This is the first phase of a larger plan for that corridor. City planners have been pushing for more walkable development near the interstate, and this project is the first real test of that vision. On the housing side, inventory is still tight. The average home in Mesquite is selling in about 12 days right now, which is fast even by DFW standards. If you have been thinking about selling, this is still a strong market. If you are buying, you need to be pre approved and ready to move quickly. The zoning meeting on Monday night could shape a lot of what happens next. If you care about how this city grows, that is the place to be.

Quick Hits: Other Stuff Worth Knowing

  • Quick Hits: Other Stuff Worth Knowing A few smaller things caught my eye around town this week. First, a happy ending for one local family. A lost golden retriever named Gus was found wandering near the Mesquite Golf Club on Thursday. A neighbor spotted him and posted in the community Facebook group. Within two hours, his owner was reunited with him thanks to a shared post and a microchip. Good reminder to check those chips are up to date if you have pets. Second, Mesquite High School’s robotics team placed third in the state finals last weekend. That is a huge deal. The team has been fundraising all year, and their robot, nicknamed "The Mesquite Mule," impressed the judges with its lifting mechanism. They are already planning for next season and looking for local sponsors. If you know a business that might want to help, the team meets at the high school every Tuesday evening. Finally, a quick shout out to the Mesquite Public Library*. They just launched a summer reading program for adults this year, not just kids. You can win gift cards to local restaurants just for logging your reading time. The program started June 1st and runs through August. Stop by the main branch on Gross Road to sign up. Alright, that is your quick hit roundup for today. Now I want to hear from you.

Your Turn: What Are You Loving Right Now?

  • Your Turn: What Are You Loving Right Now?* Alright, that is your quick hit roundup for today. But here is the part I look forward to the most. I have told you about Main Street Bakeshop, the farmers market, and the new development. Now I want to know what you have found. What is your favorite local business in Mesquite right now? Maybe it is a taco spot that nobody talks about yet. Or a shop on Town East that always has exactly what you need. Could be a service business, a restaurant, a boutique, or even a person who makes something in their garage. I have been collecting hidden gems from readers for a few weeks now, and the list is getting good. Someone tipped me off to a little vintage furniture store off Davis Street that I had never heard of. Another reader mentioned a mobile mechanic who will come to your house and charges half what the shops do. Those are the kinds of places that make this city special. And I want to share more of them. So here is my ask: Hit reply and tell me one local business you love. It can be a new discovery or an old favorite. Just give me the name, what they do, and why you keep going back. I will feature the best responses in an upcoming edition. Your recommendation might be exactly what someone else in Mesquite needs to find this week. Let us build this list together. Reply away.
